Guide to Chick Flicks

October 9th, 2002

Here are some random observations pertaining to chick flicks.

  1. Many chick flicks are named after old songs. Simply Irresistible, Addicted to Love, Sweet Home Alabama, When a Man Loves a Woman, The Sweetest Thing, Leaving Las Vegas and Pretty Woman to name a few.
  2. Gratuitous bra and panty shots are not only acceptable within chick flicks; they are encouraged. Women are offended when women are exploited and used as sex objects in action and comedy films, but if it is in a chick flick, it is A OK.
  3. Clothes Montage. This is a prerequisite for any good chick flick. How is it that every girl finds herself in a clothing store and ends up trying on clothes in every single chick flick? Actually, this is a phenomenon that transcends chick flicks, and goes into pretty much every single “romantic comedy”. I am pretty sure that in order to have “romantic” attached to a comedy movie, it has to have a clothes montage scene. And these scenes are always the exact same! It’s always a girl trying on moderately revealing clothes, and dancing in front of a mirror while a Robert Palmer song is playing in the background and the girls are smiling like they have never had more fun in their lives. Please put an end to this immediately!
  4. Characters singing a song from the soundtrack in the middle of the movie. My Best Friends Wedding, Coyote Ugly to name a few… Ladies eat this up… ask any female with a pulse what their favorite movie moment is, and they will say the dinner scene in My Best Friends Wedding. I have yet to mention my “love” of this scene to a female without them proposing marriage to me. Women love that movie, and they love that scene more than anything in the world. The way to a woman’s heart is purchasing them My Best Friends Wedding on DVD. Sit back and enjoy the results.
  5. Men Suck. Men are pigs. It’s not a chick flick unless it contains a 40 Minute monologue by Bonnie Hunt talking about how bad men suck (Jerry Maguire anyone?).

This is just a small list of things that I have noticed in estrogen-oriented films. I’m sure there is more that I will add at a later date. Enjoy.
