Reindeer Run

On Saturday, December 3, 2005, I am participating in my first ever race. While it’s not a very competetive race, and it’s not a long distance, I’m excited to be doing something constructive. It is called the Reindeer Run, and is a 5k. To those of you who are metric system holdouts, that’s somewhere in the 3 mile neighborhood… which nothing but a brisk jog for an iron machine like myself.

My good friend Jen invited me to join her team of runners for the race. Our team consists of her friends from nursing school who share a mutual appreciation for running. Best yet, my buddy Bill decided to join the team as well, so I’m assured of a wingman.

The cool thing about this race is that you are encouraged to dress up in costumes!
Our team decided to dress up as Santa and Ms. Claus (I’m Santa) and then the rest will be reindeers leading the way. I’m not sure how this will rank along the originality scale, but it should be cool either way. Plus, all of the ideas I came up with involved drunken reindeer or sexy elves… or even drunken sexy elves. Probably not appropriate for this race.

By now you are wondering how such a “festively plump” person such as myself can run in such a race. First of all, I’m not as fat as you think. Second of all, I run all the time. In fact, I probably run more than you chubs. Here is my running schedule from Thanksgiving week:

  • Monday – 6 miles
  • Tuesday – off
  • Wednesday – 3 miles
  • Thursday (Thanksgiving!) – 3 miles
  • Friday – 5 miles (ran the last mile at a fast wicked pace too!)
  • Saturday – 3 miles

That’s a lot of running for a guy who played defensive tackle in football.

If you’re an early riser, head out to Lake Harriet at 9:30 Saturday, December 3 to catch the festivities.

Wow, Jeff. You are a rock star! Did your team take first? I definitely want to see pics of you racing in a Santa suit! lol. I could never be a long-distance runner
