Jambo,
I made this page as a way for people to share my experiences, thoughts, and photos
from my trip to Kenya. Here are some of my observations on Kenya.
- The hotel the group stayed in was located on "Nairobi's Safest Street". Why is the street so safe
you ask? Well, because it is directly across the street from the Israeli embassy. I was walking home
from the hospital yesterday and I was stopped by an armed guard. Scary!
- On our first morning in the Hospital, Lucas and I took a camera with us to film a meeting between
doctors in a room called the theater. Little did we know is that theater is a British term for
operating room. We started walking to the Theater, and they made us put on OR scrubs,
as well as masks and hair nets. Then suddenly we were in the middle of an operating room, filming
open heart surgery. It was amazing one of the most remarkable sights I have ever seen. We actually saw the
beating heart stop, and then start up again.
- Getting up close and personal with a Giraffe was a great experience, actually having them eat out of my hand was
even better.
- My highlight from the animal orphanage was being 2 feet away from a cheetah, and filming it with a video camera.
It was amazing how close we could get to a wild animal, and still be safe. We even got to pet the cheetah while it
ate.
- We went to the house of the lady who wrote the book Out of Africa. Since I have never read the
book/seen the movie, it didn't really do much for me. Of course, I have a funny story. This house was
very rustic, and the toilets were like out house toilets. There was a group of Japanese tourists in the
house along with us. One of the Japanese ladies sat on the toilet and started making funny noises.
It was classic.
- Kenya has many original stores, in a generic way. For example, they have a store called Kobil,
which is a gas station, and borrows the Mobil logo. Need bottled water? Try a Kevian, the Kenyan Evian.
For those of you on the trip, please feel free to email me more of these observations.
- We saw the rubble of the US embassy that was bombed in 1998. I have nothing positive to say about
this sight.
- One of the unsung heroes of this trip was my new friend Tusker. For those of you who don't know, Tusker is
the beer of Kenya, and it is actually quite good. In fact, they are actually importing it to the United States,
so go pick some up!
Ok, now it's time for the pictures!
